Željko Pribanić

A painter’s practice rooted in four decades of attentive looking — at landscape, at light, at the silent architecture of the world.

Biography

Željko Pribanić was born in 1970 in Zagreb, Croatia. His practice is rooted in the classical painting traditions of Central Europe, exploring the tension between landscape and memory, between documentation and interpretation. He studied in Velika Gorica and developed an interest in art and painting at an early age. He joined a group of painters known as Grupa 69, considered the most important association of amateur painters in Croatia. Since 2005, he has been a member of the Society of Fine Artists of Velika Gorica.

He has exhibited in Croatia and abroad, working in oil and watercolour, and is represented in more than ten galleries in his home country. He divides his life and work between Velika Gorica and the island of Rab. The following is a brief list of his major exhibitions in the period from 2003 to 2015. His landscapes draw inspiration from the Croatian countryside and the Adriatic coast, capturing the quality of light at particular moments: dawn over the hills, the pale grey of the afternoon, the brief gold before dusk. His series of vedute ranges from intimate Venetian canals to the grand squares of Italian Renaissance cities, particularly those in the Veneto region.

Both bodies of work share a fundamental sensibility — the belief that painting a place means entering into a long conversation with it. Pribanić has exhibited numerous works throughout Croatia and abroad, with significant recognition at exhibitions in Italy.
